Hope is… an anchor for the soul

25 September 2025
When an early sailing ship was struggling to get through the narrow channel into a harbour because of stormy weather, a small boat (called a forerunner) would be rowed through the breakers into the harbour carrying the ship’s anchor. The anchor was made firm and secure and then the ship could be safely hauled in on the anchor rope.

The Bible speaks about hope being an anchor for the soul, an anchor that is firm and secure. But how does that work? Perhaps an anchor in life would be good but how is hope an anchor? And what sort of hope gives me an anchor?

The Bible letter to the Hebrews says that the anchor is not a thing but a person, Jesus Christ. The writer then changes the metaphor, saying that after Jesus died and rose from death he ascended to heaven. It’s a historical fact Jesus lived and died; but three days later his body and soul were reunited in life and a few weeks later he ascended to heaven. Which means that there is a real man, who is fully human (with a body), but also fully God (infinite) who is in heaven.

All of which says that when God offers us hope as an anchor for the soul, it is something that is truly firm and secure – rooted in fact and history. The Bible offers this kind of hope to everyone who is holding on to Jesus.
